Spiritual Awakening: Understanding Ourselves as Part of God

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

Awakening to Immortality and Creative Power

Silhouette of a human figure stands before a radiant, colorful orb emitting light, surrounded by vibrant flowers and a vast sky.

The Seth books channeled by Jane Roberts left a profound mark on me in my twenties. Seth was the first to teach me that we are immortal spirits having physical experiences—not physical bodies having spiritual experiences. He introduced the radical idea that we chose to be here, incarnating into physical form by our own will as creators of our personal reality. This concept was staggering to me at the time. I felt powerless in my life, so taking responsibility for everything that seemed out of my control felt overwhelming. Back then, I could only identify with my ego, which saw God as separate from me. If God was the Creator, how could I also be a creator?

I didn’t fully see myself as a divine spirit in those days. I had communicated with spirits and felt the presence of something others called “God,” but the religious frameworks around the word often left me alienated. At the same time, I’d experienced moments of inner guidance—something wise, loving, and different from my usual self. Eventually, I began to question why my experiences of God were always internal rather than external. If God were “out there,” why was my connection with Him so intimate, so within?

Awakening to Our Unity with God

The concept of separation from God is a misconception we’ve come to accept as a ‘given.’ Perceiving ourselves as separate blocks our awareness of our unity with Him and His Sonship. Jesus explains in A Course in Miracles (ACIM,) that a “mad idea” arose within the mind of the Son of God—that he could exist separately from His Father. Thus, the memory of unity was obscured, replaced by perception—an ingrained habit of seeing what you believe—supporting the illusion of separation. The mistaken belief in a self-concept separate from the greater wholeness of God entrenches us in the illusion of separation. We perceive what we believe and then justify the belief because we perceive it. This circular thinking makes it difficult to return to the truth of oneness.

Into eternity, where all is one, there crept a tiny, mad idea, at which the Son of God remembered not to laugh. In his forgetting did the thought become a serious idea, and possible of both accomplishment and real effects.(ACIM, T-27.VIII.6:2-3)

Imagine if you had amnesia and forgot your family. They would still know who you are and recognize you as one of them, but you would not. Your memory lapse wouldn’t alter the reality of your relationship with them, though it would prevent you from experiencing it. Similarly, our denial of our shared divinity within God doesn’t alter the truth; it simply hides it from our awareness.

Unity in Creation: From Perception to Knowledge

Seth’s teachings shed light on how God’s will, love, and intelligence brought Creation into existence. God expressed His essence through three aspects of Himself—God the Father (Will), God the Son (Consciousness), and God the Holy Spirit (Active Intelligence). Just as light radiates from the sun, these forces expanded outward, giving rise to universes filled with creative energy, intelligence, and goodwill. Every stream of life carries this same divine potential, each with an innate desire to express and experience the love of God.

From this perspective, we can see all creation as an extension of God—Who is One—making every aspect of creation an inseparable part of Him. In A Course in Miracles, Jesus emphasizes that nothing real can be separate from God because, as the Creator of All That Is, only God is real. Therefore, any experience of separation exists only in our imagination. This understanding brings us to a vital question: how do we connect our earthly experiences with the truth of our oneness with God?

Seth describes our egoic experiences as “separateness within unity.” Due to our misperception of ourselves, we experience ourselves as separate from the whole, even though we remain one with it. In our higher, unified, superconscious level of Mind, we recognize our oneness with God. The Christ Mind experiences only what is real—remaining whole and undivided, free from differences, opposites, fear, or guilt. However, on the lower conscious level of mind—which is perceptual rather than knowing—we perceive ourselves as individualized personalities, each with a unique point of view. Despite this misperception, we can still reconnect with our shared divine Identity when we are ready to remember. When we engage in experiences of love, compassion, forgiveness, and acceptance, we transcend ego-based perceptions and contribute to the healing and awakening of the world.

Cycles of Creative Activity

Hinduism teaches that God’s creative activity follows a cyclical, evolutionary rhythm. When active, He manifests in objective forms; when passive, He expresses subjectively yet remains ever-present. We observe this rhythm in the physical universe—new stars are born, and old ones die, whole systems come and go. Just as activity waxes and wanes on the physical plane of the cosmos, our individual lives follow a similar rhythm. Understanding this cycle helps us realize that our being persists beyond any single form, opening us to our true, eternal nature.

The Divine Spark and Creative Purpose

Each of us exists as a divine spark, or "light beam," within God’s Oneness, sharing a unified life because we all derive our being from the same Source. As part of the Sonship, each divine spark carries God’s creative potential and an innate drive to express life, love, and intelligence in harmony with the whole. We begin as pure divine life, gradually differentiating as we descend into denser forms of matter, embodying forms to express ourselves creatively. In the human experience, we become self-aware, learning directly from the outcomes of our thoughts. Fearful or unpleasant experiences reveal where we uphold untrue beliefs while loving and joyful experiences offer a clearer reflection of truth. When seen in this light, all experiences—whether pleasant or challenging—support our journey to reclaim spiritual mastery as eternal, creatively intelligent, and loving expressions of God.

Through our healing journey, we learn to express our divine nature and refine the material forms we interact with. As immortal Spirits, we remain immaterial even as we operate through physical forms. We are Spirit expressing through matter; just as living in a house doesn’t make us a house, existing in a body doesn’t reduce us to a body. We are Spirit and have bodies, using them as temporary homes for our experiences. Currently, we use these forms to embody the mistaken belief in separateness, resulting in experiences of pain, aging, and death. However, by shifting our focus to express the truth of our shared divinity, we can transform our relationship with our material forms, allowing them to function differently. Understanding the distinctions between spirit, consciousness, and matter helps us unravel the confusion at the root of our suffering.

The Tree of Life: A Symbol of Differentiation within Unity

The concept of the Tree of Life beautifully and simply reveals this principle of differentiation within unity and shows us how there are various levels of conscious activity within the Creation.

Imagine sitting in a beautiful garden full of light and love. As you quiet your mind, you gently become aware of a loving Presence all around you, enveloping you in a profound sense of homecoming. Your attention falls upon an enormous tree in the center of the garden—the Tree of Life—made of light and radiating love. The Presence helps you understand that this tree symbolizes all Creation and represents everything that exists. You feel drawn to sit down now at the base of the tree, resting your back against the trunk. As you gaze up, you notice all the many branches and countless leaves above you. The Presence helps you understand that each branch and leaf on the tree represents your idea of separation within unity. Each aspect has a unique shape, place, and function, but everything is of the whole, functioning as a whole.

As you delve deeper into the tree’s lesson, you focus on its various parts, observing their interconnectedness. You notice the large main branches emerging from the trunk, with smaller branches extending from them and eventually ending in leaves—each one similar yet unique. The tree as a whole extends life, nourishment, and purpose to every part, symbolizing God the Father. The branches directly support everything connected to them, symbolizing your Spirit or the aspect of the Creation that is the Son of God. The smaller branches represent the creations of the Father and Son, as their unified will, love, and life extend outward, forming the infinitely expanding Universe or Cosmos.

The leaves represent the incarnated personality—not the physical body, but the part of the mind that thinks and dreams. This aspect currently experiences a belief in separate, personal realities, yet these experiences are not conveyed to the tree as a whole because separation is impossible. Since separation cannot be real, the truth remains within the leaf’s memory, ready to be reawakened when the leaf chooses to do so. At this level, only what is true is shared with the entire tree. First, whenever we experience qualities that are divinely true—such as peace, love, and joy—we connect with what is eternal and unified within the whole of creation. Second, when we sincerely seek guidance from a level of mind greater than our personal experience, we call upon the power of all creation, inviting miracles—shifts in perception from fear to love, from untruth to truth. By embracing our innate peace, love, and joy, we engage the support of the entire tree, accelerating our awakening.

From our perspective, the Tree of Life reveals a beautiful hierarchy within Creation, showing the different levels of consciousness and creative potential. At the highest levels, creative beings collaborate seamlessly within God’s consciousness. At our personality level, however, we experience a more limited, individuated view that can obscure our awareness of God within us and our role in Creation. This awareness hasn’t left us; we’ve simply lost touch with it, no longer believing or identifying with it. Returning to the truth is simply about opening our minds to a new way of thinking and focusing on the goodness within us.

What are you focusing on in your life? Are you caught up in feeling small and separate, or are you seeing the bigger picture of yourself and others within God and your place in the grand design? Our potential is vast but latent, waiting to be activated. Our task is to unlock this potential by forgiving our mistaken perceptions of ourselves and others, even as we live in a body. We can transform the purpose of our physical forms to serve as expressions of love and connection rather than vehicles of separation. Our emotions offer us feedback on the quality of our thoughts, guiding us to make adjustments where needed.

As we embrace this process, we discover the powerful forces within us and gradually learn to master them.

Looking Forward

In my next post, we’ll explore the three primary aspects of God:

  1. God the Father

  2. God the Son

  3. God the Holy Spirit

We’ll consider how these aspects work together as the unified function of God in the universe and how they are present within us, influencing our daily lives.

Practices for Self-Discovery

  • Connect with Your Spirit

Sit quietly for a moment and imagine your Spirit patiently waiting for you to remember and attend to it. Focus your attention on this deep source of love and wisdom within you. Focus on your breathing for a few moments, and allow the body to decompress, let go, and relax. Focus on one thing that you are grateful for today, and allow that gratitude to flow through you. Open your hands in a gesture of receiving, and imagine a golden light filling you up. Put your mind in a receptive state, and be willing to listen and receive. Ask for a deep experience of remembrance of who you are.

  • Quiet Reflection and Journaling

Can you imagine that you might actually exist even beyond objective form? Can you imagine that you are pure loving consciousness and that you periodically use bodily forms to reveal yourself? What comes up for you when you consider this possibility?

  • Experience a Guided Meditation

Experience a guided meditation that leads you through expanding levels of consciousness. Universal Mind Meditation
